I started this as a column for a newspaper that would highlight some of the surprising differences between the Carolinas but decided to bring this to Substack.
Usually, this would be written from the perspective of being in North Carolina but for Memorial Day weekend, I am visiting family in the Midlands of the Palmetto State.
Our intent was to go to my mom and stepfather’s house in Lexington, S.C. to take our four-month-old for her first time swimming. Also, our 83-pound St. Berdoodle, River, also enjoys splashing in the pool.
But…….
Unlike many Memorial Day weekends of the past with warm temperatures and an unofficial start to summer, we have experienced rain and cold temperatures akin to an early springtime.
To make matters worse, our baby had her four-month round of shots on Friday which has made our typically chill baby girl upset and unsettled.
So while I am not usually in South Carolina anymore, I am here for the weekend. Maybe I should hit up the Lizzard’s Thicket to satisfy my longing for that comforting meat and three.
